Lift cables work alongside the springs to raise and lower your door evenly. When one snaps or frays, the door becomes unsafe to operate until it's replaced.
Stop using the door. A garage door with a broken cable is being held up unevenly, which puts extra strain on the remaining cable and spring system. Continuing to operate it risks the door falling. Leave it in its current position and call for service rather than forcing it open or closed.
Cables wear from friction against the drum and bottom bracket over thousands of open/close cycles. Rust from moisture exposure, a bent bottom bracket, or an off-track roller can all accelerate fraying. Cables typically need replacement around the same interval as springs, and we usually check both together since they share the same load path.
We release spring tension safely, remove the damaged cable and inspect the drum for wear, install a new matched cable, and rebalance the door before testing a full open/close cycle. If the bottom bracket or rollers show wear that contributed to the failure, we'll flag it so you're not back to the same problem in a year.
That's a strong sign of a cable problem. Don't force it — call us for same-day service.
