How Long Should a Garage Door Last? A Realistic Lifespan Guide

A garage door isn't one part — it's a system of components that wear out on very different timelines. Knowing which is which helps you tell a normal repair from a sign the whole door needs replacing.

The Door Itself: 15-30 Years

A well-maintained steel or aluminum door can last 20-30 years. Wood and wood-composite doors are typically shorter-lived, especially without regular sealing, and are more exposed to Illinois freeze-thaw cycles. The door's structural life is usually much longer than any single component attached to it.

Springs: 7-12 Years, or About 10,000 Cycles

Springs are rated by cycle count (one cycle = one full open-and-close) rather than calendar years. A household that opens the garage door twice a day burns through roughly 10,000 cycles in 7-12 years. A door used more heavily — a home office with a lot of coming and going, or a family with several drivers — will wear through that faster.

Openers: 10-15 Years

Motors, gears, and circuit boards degrade with use and age. Most openers are reasonably reliable for 10-15 years before a repair starts costing a meaningful fraction of a full replacement. Newer openers also add safety and security features (rolling codes, battery backup) that older units simply don't have, which is often as strong a reason to replace as the mechanical wear itself.

Cables, Rollers & Hardware: 7-10 Years

These wear roughly alongside the springs, since they share the same load. Nylon rollers are quieter but wear faster than steel rollers with bearings; either type is a relatively inexpensive part to replace proactively during a tune-up.

Repair vs. Replace: A Simple Rule of Thumb

If the door structure itself is sound and the problem is a spring, cable, opener, or single damaged panel, repair is almost always the better value. Replacement starts to make more sense when multiple systems are failing at once, the door is well past 20 years old, or you're specifically after better insulation or a style upgrade.

Not sure which category your door falls into? See maintenance & tune-ups for an inspection, or new garage door installation if you're already leaning toward replacement.
