Before you call for service, a few of these opener issues can be checked — or at least narrowed down — in under five minutes.
Start with the obvious: replace the remote battery. If that doesn't fix it, the remote may have lost its programming with the opener's receiver, which usually just needs to be re-paired following the steps in the opener's manual. If re-pairing doesn't work either, the receiver itself may have failed.
Listen for the motor running with no corresponding door movement. This usually means the trolley has disconnected from the drive (sometimes intentional, via the manual release cord, sometimes not), or a belt/chain has broken or slipped off its track inside the rail.
This is almost always a limit-of-travel or force setting that's slightly off, telling the opener the door has hit an obstruction when it's actually just reached the floor. Most openers have a small adjustment screw or menu setting for this — but it's easy to overcorrect and create a safety issue, so this is worth having checked by a technician if the manual adjustment doesn't hold.
The photo-eye sensors near the bottom of each track need a clear, aligned line of sight to each other. A blinking light usually means they're dirty, knocked out of alignment, or something is blocking the beam. Wipe both lenses and check that neither bracket has been bumped out of position.
A single loud click with no other movement often points to a stripped drive gear inside the motor housing — a repair, not a lubrication fix. Ongoing grinding or humming during operation is more often a chain, belt, or rail issue.
Check whether the outlet the opener is plugged into has power, and check the breaker. Openers with battery backup should still function during an outage — if yours has backup and still isn't responding, the backup battery itself may need replacing.
This isolates the problem to the remote or its receiver rather than the opener itself — see #1 above.
If none of this resolves it, see our full opener repair & installation page, or call and describe what you're seeing — we can often narrow it down further over the phone.
